PTS is proud to offer professional metabolic testing to the New England endurance community. Now triathletes and runners of all ability levels can access incredibly detailed information about their athletic profile, and even more importantly, put this information into practice through a personalized training plan. The staff at PTS are dedicated to assessing and developing your athletic potential. To that end, we offer both physiological and performance testing to help our athletes methodically analyze their progress. View a sample Performance Assessment report here.

PERFORMANCE TESTING

Endurance athletes spend a great deal of time training, including long periods of time without any actual competition. Without a race to gauge your training progress and competitive fitness, it becomes even more important to have a set of specific tests which can accurately determine your fitness and indicate whether your training protocol is effective. The PTS Performance Assessment is a 30-minute test conducted on a treadmill or on your bicycle + a stationary trainer that helps the PTS staff to:

* Identify specific physiological indices that influence your performance
* Project caloric needs specific to you during exercise
* Identify your physiological strengths and weaknesses
* Allow you and your coach to make informed decisions about your training schedule
* Develop a truly individualized training program

We use the results of the PTS Performance Assessment to develop personal heart-rate (or power) training zones for each athlete. Precisely knowing your VO2 Peak, Lactate Threshold, and Aerobic Threshold will help to increase the effectiveness of your training and eliminate junk miles. This information will be discussed during your assessment and will be presented to you in a PDF report.

"Thought you might like to hear some posative feedback already. So I've been using the heart rate zones you provided. Monday I road my trainer for an hour at 147 bpm, staying at 290-300 watts trying to get some last minute endurance but not go anaerobic, Tuesday went out on the road with my TT bike 30 minutes easy with a few minutes at TT pace. Wednesday showed up to the TT, warmed up 30 minutes, started the TT slower and then gradually brought my HR up to 168-170 and settled in (rather than 172-175). I finished with my best time so far; 27:26 and I felt better than ever at the finish. I think previously I just started out too hard and bathed my legs in lactic acid then remained in pain until the end. So things are going better for me in only a few days. I really spent too many years in the red zone a couple of times per week and this resulted in over training and results worse than I'm capable of. So thanks for the guidance." -Scott

PTS EFFICIENCY ANALYSIS

The PTS Efficiency Analysis combines the critical information derived from the PTS Performance Assessment with an individualized review of your pedal stroke / running gait. The Performance Assessment is the cornerstone of the Efficiency Analysis as it reveals exactly how much oxygen is used to produce a certain amount of power or speed, allowing us to objectify the efficiency of an athlete's movements. This version of the Performance Assessment is preceeded by an extended warm up where your PTS coach will review your performance at varied intensities + speeds. After this review, your coach will conduct a Performance Assessment. After the assessment, your coach will then review your gain (run analysis) or pedal stroke (cycling analysis) using a digital camera. At the end of your Efficiency Analysis, you will recieve a PDF report, an analysis of your digital photos / video, and a set of recommendations to implement for improving your efficiency.

PTS METABOLIC PROFILE

The PTS Metabolic Profile is a simple, 20-minute breath test that will determine exactly how many calories your body burns each day at rest. With this information, you can more accurately decide how many calories to consume each day to reach your goals, whether they are to gain, lose, or maintain your weight. Imagine how much easier it would be to achieve your goal weight if you know exactly how much you were burning off. The PTS Metabolic Profile gives you this insight.

RMR Graph

Above is a sample of the graph generated with the Resting Metabolic Rate Test. The large straight horizontal band shows the RMR predicted for this client with standard formulas. The thin red line moving up and down is her actual metabolic rate measurement. You can see that her actual RMR is much slower than predicted.}

Your metabolic profile changes based on a number of factors, including changes in weight, body composition, diet, gains (and losses) in muscle mass, and in response to aerobic and weight training exercise. This means that it can be valuable to re-check your resting metabolic rate over time, especially after significant changes in your habits or your body. With on-going monitoring, you can be sure that your eating and exercise habits are always right on target.

PTS TOTAL BODY ASSESSMENT

A complete body analysis with Maureen Bruno-Roy of Shanti Studio, Licensed Massage Therapist and elite Cyclo-Cross racer, to determine structural imbalances and recommend preventative measures. Range of Motion (ROM) testing, typically reserved to injury rehabilitation, is especially useful prior to the season to obtain information on an athlete's degree of flexibility, to detect any deficiencies in bilateral symmetry, and to identify musculoskeletal restrictions that could lead to injury. This assessment takes approximately 1.5 hours and is conducted at the Shanti Studio office in Arlington, MA.
